Judy has been a dedicated practitioner of Iyengar Yoga since 1992 after discovering that it helped her to recover from a back injury and to quiet a busy mind. The detailed and creative approach of the Iyengar method immediately deepened a sense of connection between her mind and body, like new avenues opening up. She trained at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Maida Vale and became a certified teacher in 2007 and received her Intermediate Level 3 certification in March 2017 after passing rigorous national assessments.

Warmth and humour

Judy’s teaching is encouraging and enthusiastic, full of warmth and humour. Classes are tailored to individual's needs and abilities, providing modifications so the instructions fit the person, not the pose (asana). She remembers being stiff as a beginner and how amazed she was by practitioners who seemed so flexible and graceful. As a teacher she aims to enable her students to find that inner freedom within their own yoga practise.  She continues to deepen her knowledge through her own practise, and by reflecting on the practise of her inspiring students. She studies with Marios Argiros, in the UK and in Crete, as well as attending numerous workshops with Lois Steinberg over many years, and with Uday Bhosale, Bobby Clennell and visiting teachers from India and Europe. Judy has been fortunate to have studied with the Iyengars on several occasions at the RIMYI Institute in Pune, most recently in February 2023, and with Geetaji and Abhijata Iyengar in the UK.

Judy has a keen interest in how the practise of yoga can improve recovery from particular health problems and to avoid future injury. She has assisted in Remedial classes in London, as well as in the medical classes in Pune during annual monthly visits. Judy offers private 1:1 or 2:1 classes in her home studio to support your practise, to recover from injuries or to focus on particular imbalances or postures.

Connection of mind and body

Judy’s previous experience as an Art Psychotherapist in the NHS for over 20 years made her aware of yoga’s empowering effect on one’s emotional and mental state, explored through the canvas of the body. Her teaching experience is richly varied, including community groups, spas, leisure centres, Yoga studios, women's groups, corporate and staff groups, seniors, private and one to one classes. Teaching such a variety of students confirms the adaptability of Iyengar Yoga while continually enriching Judy’s teaching and inspiring her own practise. She has also enjoyed leading yoga retreats abroad for many years. Judy enjoys working with with compete beginners whose excitement is visible they begin to feel transformed by the practise, as well as with experienced practitioners. She believes that each experience on the mat should be new and challenging, and deepen our self awareness in subtle and often surprising ways.

Yoga and Ageing

Having practised Iyengar Yoga continuously since 1992 Judy has deepened her self awareness, stamina, balance and compassion.. She has also witnessed her students age with more ease of movement and confidence in their minds and bodies, spiritual sensitivity and how they move in the world. Yoga helps us not only to maintain good health, but to improve!
