FAQs
What do I wear?
Wear clothes that don't restrict your movement in any way. A t-shirt or vest and shorts or leggings are most suitable so the teacher can see your alignment. Yoga is always practised in bare feet. A changing area and toilets are available.
Can I eat before class?
Yoga should be practised on an empty stomach, so please allow 3-4 hours after a main meal or 2 hours after a light snack. We don’t drink water during the practise.
Can anyone attend classes?
Iyengar Yoga is suitable for anyone regardless of age, gender, religion or circumstances. The classes are for people of generally good health (refer to the Guidelines within the Classes section of this site). The classes are friendly and are not competitive. A distinctive feature of Iyengar Yoga is the use of equipment (props) to enable you to progress in the postures safely at your own pace.
What can I expect?
The lessons consist of simple postures (asanas) which gradually progress towards more challenging postures. The sequences are varied according to different groups of movement. Yoga postures extend and align the body, open the joints, lengthen the muscles and create space in the body for better breathing and organ function. Classes are reasonably active and increase vitality while calming and refreshing the mind.
All classes end with relaxation to relieve stress and tension.
How will I know I’m benefiting?
Yoga brings stamina, firmness and grace. The body is freed from trapped tensions by stretching and movement. The breathing can become deep and even. The practitioner learns to focus and the art of self-observation. The intelligence and powers of perception are enhanced, which overlap into other areas of life. This creates poise and a sense of psychological composure.
What do I need to bring?
All equipment is available such as mats, blocks, blankets, bolsters, and belts, but students are welcome to bring their own mat.
Please don’t wear scented products or soaps as some students have allergies or sensitivities.
